Morgan Tsvangirai, the head of the Movement for Democratic Change, was born in Gutu, Masvingo Province on 10 March 1952.
It was home to the late Dr Oliver Munyaradzi, Simon Muzenda, former vice president of Zimbabwe as well as Lt. Gen. (Rtd.) Vitalis Zvinavashe (born September 27, 1943 in Gutu – died March 11, 2009) who was a Commander of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces and politician.
Tungamirai was born into a peasant family as Thomas Mberikwazvo on 8 October 1948 in Gutu, Masvingo Province in what was then Southern Rhodesia.

He fired the first shot in 1958 by slaying two policemen and together with Abdullai Usman Gutu proceeded to the jungle in 1962 to widen an armed resistance against Haile Selassie’s land policies in what is now Oromia Region, where most Oromo live.

General Waqo Gutu Usu (1920 - February 3, 2006) was an Oromo rebel figure and leader of one of the earlier Oromo separatist movements; the Bale rebel movement in the 1960s that fought against the Ethiopian Empire.
