Gwiazda's father was a sailor of the Riverine Flotilla of the Polish Navy, stationed in Pińsk (now Belarus), where the family moved in 1939, a few months before the outbreak of World War II.
On October 15 he was guest on a TV show Weekend z Gwiazdą (Weekend with the Star) which was, by way of an exception, broadcast from the Stansted airport near London, UK.
A resistance group, called “Polish Military Organisation” (Polska Organizacja Wojskowa) was formed and included a number of the village’s residents, including Aleksander Gwiazda, Gwiazda (brother of Aleksandra), Ignacy Pokorski, Wacław Połomski, Aleksander Przybyłek and Wacław Szmytkowski.
