HMNB Devonport

Her Majesty's Naval Base (HMNB) Devonport (formerly HMS Drake), is one of three operating bases in the United Kingdom for the Royal Navy (the others being HMNB Clyde and HMNB Portsmouth).

Edmund Dummer a Naval Officer travelled the West Country searching for an area where a dockyard could be built; he sent in two estimates for sites, one in Plymouth, Cattewater and one further along the coast, on the Hamoaze, a section of the River Tamar, in the parish of Stoke Damerel.

Cheadle served as Director of Nuclear Propulsion at the Ministry of Defence and then as Commander of HM Naval Base Devonport.

Warship Support Agency

As well as project teams the WSA operated the three naval bases in Portsmouth, Plymouth and on the Clyde.

History of the Ministry of Defence Police

Serco Denholm

Serco Denholm is a joint venture between Serco Group and Denholm Group to provide Marine Services in support of the Naval Service at its three main naval bases, HMNB Portsmouth, HMNB Devonport and HMNB Clyde.

However, Marine Services was put out to commercial tender by the Ministry of Defence Warship Support Agency (now part of the Defence Equipment and Support organisation) and since 1996 tugs, lifting craft, various tenders and management of HMNB Devonport, Portsmouth and Clyde have been operated and provided by Serco Denholm.

Woodlands Fort

Woodland Fort is one of the Palmerston Forts that form Plymouth's North Eastern defences, whose purpose was to defend the Royal Dockyard at Devonport from the possibility of a French attack, under the leadership of Napoleon III.
