In April 1941 he sailed on HMS Argus for Gibraltar, where he was transferred to HMS Ark Royal and was one of a group of Hurricane pilots who flew off Ark Royal for Malta.

The balloon took part in some famous flights including one from HMS Ark Royal, where it was piloted by Lt Terry Adams, accompanied by Lt Howard Draper both of 849 Squadron, B Flight.
One British writer claimed that the early school was influenced by a group of a dozen flying instructors from the British Fleet Air Arm aboard HMS Ark Royal, who were graduates of the Royal Navy's intense Air Warfare Instructors School in Lossiemouth, Scotland.
