Valentin Haüy (1745–1822), French founder of the first school for the blind
Son of Paul Hay du Chastelet (1592–1636), nephew of Daniel Hauy du Chastelet (1596–1671).
In June 1784, Haüy sought his first pupil at the church of Saint-Germain-des-Prés.
Jacob Snider, Jr.'s system, using rounded letters similar to Haüy's system, which was used in a publication of the Gospel of Mark in 1834, the first embossed book in the United States.
