7 unusual facts about Hague Conventions of 1899 and 1907

Committee of Secretaries-General

Throughout 1940 the Secretaries-General continued to follow their "policy of lesser-evils", influenced by the Galopin doctrine, in the hope that the occupiers would respect the protocol established at the Hague Conventions of 1907.

Friedrich Wilhelm Foerster

Foerster became convinced that Germany had blocked the success of the Hague Conventions in 1907, and had thereby isolated itself internationally and drawn a course for war.

Giulio Gavotti

The dropping of bombs from balloons had been outlawed by the Hague Convention of 1899, but Italy argued that this ban did not extend to aircraft.

Hague Conventions of 1899 and 1907

An American missionary, Homer Hulbert, also travelled to The Hague to argue against the treaty.

Hermann Pister

Pister was arrested by the Americans in 1945; put on trial for war crimes by the American Military Tribunal at Dachau with 30 other defendants where he was charged with participation in a "common plan" to violate the Laws and Usages of war of the Hague Convention of 1907 and the third Geneva Convention of 1929, in regard to the rights of Prisoners of War.

Jan Hoynck van Papendrecht

He was recruited by the British art weekly The Graphic to make sketches of delegates to the Hague Conventions, in addition to the portraits of soldiers that he already published in it.

Stavanger Airport, Forus

Work at Forus commenced on 21 April, originally by putting 350 Norwegian prisoners of war to work, in violation with the Hague Convention.

Legal status of Germany

The issue of the legal status of Germany from an international legal perspective prompted questions, as the Allied takeover was neither determined by the Hague Conventions nor could it be measured against the three-element theory of state law developed by the legal academic Georg Jellinek (1851–1911), whereafter a state qualifies as a subject of international law if it fulfills the three characteristics of territory, people, and government.
