This fern grows in the moist riparian forests on the slopes of two mountains on Maui, one of which is the volcano Haleakalā.
It was described in 1991 from subfossil material collected in September 1982 by Storrs Olson, Helen James and others, from the Auwahi Cave on the southern slopes of Haleakalā, on the island of Maui.
The first Pan-STARRS telescope, PS1, is located at the summit of Haleakalā on Maui, Hawaii, and went online on December 6, 2008, under the administration of the University of Hawaii.
From the park you can view waterfalls, the Ko'olau Gap, Wailua Peninsula and the rim of Haleakala Crater.
