Upon completion of flying training, he was assigned to the 11th Bombardment Squadron, 7th Bombardment Group, Hamilton Field, California, and in December 1941, was deployed with this unit to the Southwest Pacific.
After a year of being hospitalized, Hobson was assigned to the 22nd Bombardment Squadron in April 1940, and served at Hamilton Field, California, and Fort Douglas, Utah.
Again the inter-service rivalry was overruled by the War Department, citing the Navy's need for coastal defense a priority and ordered the Army to move its training headquarters to Hamilton Field in Marin County, north of San Francisco.
