3 unusual facts about Handbook of the Birds of the World

Handbook of the Birds of the World

More than 200 renowned specialists and 35 illustrators (including Toni Llobet, Hilary Burn, Chris Rose and H. Douglas Pratt) from more than 40 countries have contributed to the project up to now, as well as 834 photographers from all over the world.

The first volume was selected as Bird Book of the Year by the magazines Birdwatch and British Birds, and the fifth volume was recognised as Outstanding Academic Title by Choice Magazine, the American Library Association magazine.

It has an introductory essay on "Species Concepts and Species Limits in Ornithology" by Jürgen Haffer.

Dunn's Lark

The species belongs to the genus Eremalauda; Stark's Lark of Southern Africa is sometimes placed in this genus as well but other authorities such as Handbook of the Birds of the World place it in Spizocorys.

Great Sparrow

Some authors considered this species to be the same as the Iago Sparrow, and some recognise only some of the rufous sparrows as separate from the Great Sparrow, but the Handbook of the Birds of the World recognises the Socotra Sparrow, Kenya Sparrow, Kordofan Sparrow, and Shelley's Sparrow.
