The HP.88 was delivered to Handley Page and on 6 August 1951 was flown to Stansted for further testing.

The completed HP.88 was taken by road to Carnaby near Bridlington, where it was flown for the first time on 21 June 1951.

Following retirement at RAE Bedford XP841 was placed on display at the museum at RAF Colerne.
The R/200 was designed in 1917 to meet an Admiralty requirement for a two-seat reconnaissance-fighter capable of operating either as a floatplane or from the Royal Navy's new aircraft carriers, the flush deck HMS Argus and the part converted cruiser HMS Furious.
The biplane Vickers Type 253 design, which used a radical geodesic airframe construction that was derived from that used by Barnes Wallis in the airship R100, was ordered by the Ministry and tested against the specification along with the Fairey G.4/31, Westland PV-7, Handley Page HP.47, Armstrong Whitworth A.W.19, Blackburn B-7, Hawker P.V.4 and the Parnall G.4/31.
