The group's biggest song, "(We Ain't Got) Nothin' Yet", whose Vox Continental organ riff bears an uncanny resemblance to the 1962 hit by Ricky Nelson, "Summertime" (Deep Purple also used this riff in their hit "Black Night"), was released as a single in 1967 (albeit from their 1966 album), with "Gotta Get Away" as the b-side.
In 1991, he made his first television appearance (since SNL in 1980), on an episode of Law & Order, as Ray Bell, then he appeared in numerous films: Hangin' with the Homeboys and Strictly Business, opposite Halle Berry, Anne-Marie Johnson, Tommy Davidson, and Samuel L. Jackson.
ABC was not willing to keep the show on TGIF, since they were adding the already successful Hangin' With Mr. Cooper and the new Michael Jacobs series Boy Meets World to the Friday lineup.
The song "Sure As I'm Sittin' Here" was covered that same year by Three Dog Night on their album Hard Labor, and was a top 20 hit.

The Hangin' Tough music film was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Music Video, Long Form (now called Best Music Film) at the 1990 Grammy Awards, but lost to Rhythm Nation 1814 by Janet Jackson, beating up Eurythmics's Savage, Michael Jackson's Moonwalker, and Pink Floyd's In Concert: Delicate Sound of Thunder.

, was released in 2001, packaged along with Volume 7: Gypsy Marches in a gatefold 10" album format. The name comes from a line in the song "Hangin' Tree" from the previous volume. The riff of "Cold Sore Superstars" was later used on the Queens of the Stone Age song No One Knows.
Rumours spread that it was written about Elvis Presley due to the mentioning of things like "steel guitar across his back" and "heard he came from Memphis, somewhere down south, started hangin' with the blues crowd, that's how he got that crazy sound".
