Karl Brendel

Karl Brendel is the pseudonym of Karl Genzel (1871 – 1925), a schizophrenic outsider artist and one of the "schizophrenic masters" profiled by Hans Prinzhorn in his field-defining work Artistry of the Mentally Ill (1923, in German; English edition 1972).

Prinzhorn Dance School

They have taken their name from Dr Hans Prinzhorn, who collected art by mentally ill patients under his care.


William A. F. Browne



In 1839, Browne had initiated one of the first collections of art by mental patients in institutions, gathering a large amount of work which he had bound into three volumes, in many ways a forerunner of Hans Prinzhorn's Artistry of the Mentally Ill and the academic study of outsider art (art brut).
