The tenure of the ministry extended beyond the independence of Malaya on August 31, 1957 although it was reshuffled with the addition of new portfolios following independence and was only dissolved with the first post-independence general elections was called on August 19, 1959.
The Federation of Malaysia, comprising the States of Malaya, North Borneo (later renamed Sabah), Sarawak and Singapore was to be officially declared on the date August 31, 1963, on the 6th anniversary of Malayan independence.
It was previewed to public during the Hari Merdeka celebration in 1996 before the production officially started in December.
Construction began right after the completion of Segamat Second Bridge in 2001 and completed in August 2005, several weeks before National Day celebration of 2005.

After celebrating Malaya's independence (Hari Merdeka), MacGillivray was accompanied by the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong of Malaya and his consort, together with Malaya's first prime minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman to board the plane in Sungai Besi Airport.
