After he served in the military, he enrolled in Hartnell College, in Salinas, California and was approached and encouraged to attend art school by Leon Amyx, who was the head of the art department at Hartnell at that time and a well known painter.

Hartnell got his big break at Wildstorm Productions and eventually worked his way up to become writer and co-creator of the hit Danger Girl series with artist J. Scott Campbell.
Danger Girl: Trinity – An all-new series in which each of the three Danger Girls' adventures is illustrated by a different artist (UK artist John Royle, American artist Brian Stelfreeze, and Canadian artist Stephen Molnar) written by Danger Girl co-creator Andy Hartnell, published by IDW Publishing in April, 2013.
Due to failing health, however, Hartnell could not participate in any of the regular filming, so his scenes were shot separately at Ealing Studios (not his garden or garage at home, as long suggested by fan legend).

In Philadelphia's final regular season game against Pittsburgh, Hartnell mocked a Penguins fan dressed as Hulk Hogan sitting directly behind the Flyers bench.
