Hatena(はてな) is a Japanese term meaning "question".
Miiverse (portmanteau of "Mii" and "Universe") is a communication system or social network for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS created by Nintendo Network Business & Development (NBD) and Hatena and powered by the Nintendo Network, which allows players to interact and share their experiences through their own Miis.
When the Nintendo DSi was announced, it was decided by Nintendo president Satoru Iwata that the company would work with Hatena, as the latter had recently shifted its R&D department to Kyoto, where Nintendo Corporate Labs is located.
