A leading local architect called Matthew Ellison Hadfield designed St Marie’s, based on a 14th-century church at Heckington in Lincolnshire.
The £2.5 million 2.8 mile-long village bypass, built by Reed & Mallik Ltd of Salisbury, was opened by Lynda Chalker on 14 December 1982, and the former route of the A17 is now the B1394, which also leads to Billingborough via Great Hale across a level crossing over the partially single-track railway near the railway station.
Most windmills had four sails, although some had five (Boston), six (Waltham, Lincs) or eight sails Heckington, Lincs and there is one recorded twelve sailed windmill (Cottenham, Cambs).
In 1762, the Witham Drainage Act was passed by Parliament, and among other things constituted the Commissioners of Sewers for the Second and Sixth District, which covered the area including Asgarby, Ewerby, Great Hale, Heckington, Holland Fen, Howell, Little Hale and South Kyme.
