4 unusual facts about Heerstraße

Chaussee

Hamburg has retained the term in its street names (Elbchaussee, Eimsbüttler Chaussee etc.), Berlin likewise (Potsdamer Chaussee, Johannisthaler Chaussee), whilst in Bremen in 1914, the chaussees were renamed, following a decision by its citizens, as Heerstraßen (literally "military roads").

Kohlenbach

Lying on the Old Celle Military Road (Alten Celler Heerstraße) that runs past Kohlenbach, coming from Hanover and Celle and heading towards Lüneburg, it served originally as an inn until the end of the 18th century.

Kohnstein

In more recent times the Kaiser Way (an old military road or Heerstraße) runs along the Kohnstein, which is accessible to hikers, as is the nearby Karst Trail.

Lauenburg Castle

The purpose of this impressive fortification with a total length of more than 350 metres was the protection of Quedlinburg and the nearby military roads.
