In the 1980s, Hellhammer, Venom, Death SS and King Diamond of Mercyful Fate (who used corpse paint as early as 1978 in his band Black Rose) were the first extreme metal groups to use corpse paint.
Noted players include Rod Morgenstein, Tim Waterson (who formerly held the world record for the fastest playing on a bass drum), Tomas Haake, Chris Adler, Derek Roddy, Danny Carey, Hellhammer, and Mike Portnoy.
To date, Black Steel has released the EP 'Battle Call' (MGM Distribution 2000), full-length album 'Destructor' (MGM/Steelheart 2001), single 'Relentless Force' (2004), and full-length album 'Hellhammer' (MGM/Steelheart 2005).
This lineup—Euronymous, Hellhammer, Attila and Vikernes—recorded the album during late 1992 and early 1993 at the Grieg Hall in Bergen.
In late 2004, Fenriz released a compilation album through Peaceville, Fenriz Presents... The Best of Old-School Black Metal, which included selected tracks from such influential artists as Celtic Frost, Hellhammer, Burzum, and Bathory.
In October 2009, Fleurety released the 7" vinyl ep Ingentes Atque Decorii Vexilliferi Apokalypsis. This release featured remakes of vintage material: the songs "Descent into Darkness", from the 1993 demo Black Snow, and "Absence". "Descent into Darkness" includes Hellhammer and Necrobutcher of Mayhem, and Runhild Gammelsæter as guest musicians.
