When the British government introduced the Cat and Mouse Act in 1913, local Suffragettes Elizabeth Robins used her 15th century farmhouse at Backsettown, near Henfield, that she shared with Octavia Wilberforce, as a retreat for suffragettes recovering from hunger strike.

In 1839 a main line railway, the Bristol and Gloucester Railway obtained its Act of Parliament; this authorised it to take over the Bristol and Gloucestershire line, and to make a main line railway to Gloucester.
It has been named to honor J. F. Wyley, who found the specimen in Weald Clay deposits of Henfield in Sussex (England).
