In 1852, Barnard was offered the newly created position of President of the University of Michigan, but he declined.

John Dudley Philbrick

At the suggestion of Henry Barnard he was recruited in 1853 to become Barnard's successor as principal of the Connecticut State Normal School.

John Whelan Sterling
