Much of the Cobham family's estate was forfeited to the Crown in 1603 when his grandson, Henry Brooke, the 11th Baron Cobham, was charged with high treason for his part in the Main Plot against James I.
His brother, Sir George Brooke, on the other hand, was involved in radical religious politics.
Their eldest son, Peter Brooke, also served as a Conservative Member of Parliament and Secretary of State, while their second son Sir Henry Brooke became a Lord Justice of Appeal.

As Home Secretary, Brooke was not particularly successful, and his actions caused controversy on several occasions, including a failure to provide adequate security for a state visit by King Paul and Queen Frederica of Greece.
They had two children, their elder son was killed in World War 1, the younger was Henry Brooke, Baron Brooke of Cumnor, who became British Home Secretary and later a peer.
In June 1600 Mary led a dance in the masque celebrating the fashionable wedding of Lady Anne Russell, granddaughter of the Earl of Bedford, with Henry Somerset, later created Marquess of Worcester, at Lord Cobham's residence in Blackfriars.
The Fool of Quality; or, The History of Henry, Earl of Moreland (1765-70), a picaresque and sentimental novel by the Irish writer Henry Brooke, is the only one of his works which has enjoyed any great reputation.
