At Eton he was the associate of Sir William Pepys, Henry Hallam, William Frere, William Herbert, and others, who were known as the "literati"; and he contributed to the Musæ Etonenses.
He survived his wife (Julia Maria, daughter of Sir Charles Elton), daughter and sons by many years.
It placed the author at once on the level of such writers on English constitutional history as Hallam and Stubbs, and supplied English jurisprudence with a text-book almost unrivalled in its of historical research.
