Arthur Somerset senior

Somerset is the great grandson of Henry Somerset, 5th Duke of Beaufort and the son of Colonel FitzRoy Molyneux Henry Somerset and Jemima Drummond Nairne.

Beaufort West

The town was founded in 1818 and initially named Beaufort after Henry Somerset, 5th Duke of Beaufort, who was the father of Lord Charles Henry Somerset, then governor of the Cape Colony.

George Hay-Drummond, 12th Earl of Kinnoull

He married Lady Emily Blanche Charlotte Somerset, daughter of Henry Somerset, 7th Duke of Beaufort, and Emily Frances Smith, on 20 July 1848.

Henry Somerset, 1st Marquess of Worcester

He was the son of Edward Somerset, 4th Earl of Worcester and Elizabeth Hastings.

On 3 March 1628, he succeeded his father and became the 5th Earl of Worcester.

# Lady Harriet Isabella Elizabeth Somerset (9 July 1775 – 1 June 1855), married Colonel Hugh Henry Mitchell and had one son and two daughters.

Together with the abbey grange at Brockweir, the manor was then granted to Henry Somerset, 2nd Earl of Worcester.

In June 1600 Mary led a dance in the masque celebrating the fashionable wedding of Lady Anne Russell, granddaughter of the Earl of Bedford, with Henry Somerset, later created Marquess of Worcester, at Lord Cobham's residence in Blackfriars.

Again he sought support from local landowners, including Lord Jersey, Lord Dynevor and the Duke of Beaufort, but again none was forthcoming.

Portcullis

It is through Lord Charles Somerset, son of the 5th Duke of Beaufort, that the portcullis has found its way into several South African coats of arms.

The Castle School

The official opening ceremony took place in 1966, attended by the Duke of Beaufort, Chancellor at the University of Bristol at the time.
