Henry Solomon Wellcome was born in a frontier log cabin in Almond, Wisconsin to Rev. S. C. Wellcome, an itinerant missionary who travelled and preached in a covered wagon, and Mary Curtis Wellcome.
She helped bring Sir Henry Wellcome's Egyptian collection, at the time held in storage, to the Department of Classics at Swansea, and would spend the next twenty years researching this 5,000 piece collection.
Her parents married in 1917, after her mother's divorce from the British pharmaceuticals magnate Henry Wellcome.
The Trust was established to administer the fortune of the American-born pharmaceutical magnate Sir Henry Wellcome.

Hartley then worked for 3 years at the Wellcome Physiological Research Laboratories and in 1922 joined the National Institute for Medical Research where he became director of biological samples.
