Astronomer and science popularizer Carl Sagan had wanted the song to be included on the Voyager Golden Record, copies of which were attached to both spacecraft of the Voyager program to provide any entity that recovered them a representative sample of human civilization.
Originally having signed on the air in 1967 as KLIQ-FM, KGON would begin its life as an AOR on February 1, 1974, with "Here Comes the Sun" by The Beatles as its first song being played on the station.
The station began broadcasting a soft rock format on August 6, 1982 when DJ Chuck Martin played the Beatles, "Here Comes the Sun" as the first song to launch Sunny95.
