His story is chronicled by Bishop Hervey, the Bishop of Ely when Chatteris Abbey (which was dated around the year 980) was placed under the patronage of the Bishop of Ely by King Henry I in 1131.
The previous bishop, Hervé, had been expelled from his see by the Welsh, and deadlock between Gruffydd and the king of England concerning the choice of a new bishop had resulted in the see being vacant for around twenty years.
The see had been effectively vacant since Bishop Hervey le Breton had been forced to flee by the Welsh almost twenty years before, since Gruffudd and King Henry could not agree on a candidate.
