Chipping Campden

There are two famous and historic gardens nearby: at Hidcote Manor Garden, owned and managed by the National Trust, and at Kiftsgate, in private ownership but open to the public.

Hidcote Manor Garden

Created by Lawrence Johnston, it is owned by the National Trust and is open to the public.

In 2007 a temporary garden designed by Chris Beardshaw that drew inspiration from Johnson's Hidcote was constructed at the Chelsea Flower Show in London.

The Americans, Lawrence Johnston and his mother, settled in Britain about 1900, and Lawrence immediately became a British citizen and fought in the British army during the Boer war.

Kiftsgate Court Gardens

It is a few hundred yards from the Hidcote Manor Garden owned by the National Trust.

Lavandula angustifolia

15" to 20" tall, with silver-gray foliage and deep violet-blue inflorescences, named after Hidcote Manor in England as it was cultivated there by Major Lawrence Johnston


Lawrence Johnston

He was the owner and designer of two influential gardens – Hidcote Manor Garden in Britain and Jardin Serre de la Madone in France.
