The Frankish overlordship ended during the reign of Mislav two decades later.

In June 1989 the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) was founded by Croatian nationalist dissidents led by Franjo Tuđman, a former fighter in Tito's Partisan movement and JNA General.

The border city of Vukovar underwent a three-month siege – the Battle of Vukovar — during which most of the city was destroyed and a majority of the population was forced to flee.
