Scott Young who was a Canadian journalist, sportswriter, novelist and the father of musicians Neil Young and Astrid Young lived in Howth in the late 1980s.
The Howth Road previously crossed at Ballybough Bridge, which was first built in 1308, washed away in a flood in 1313.
He was on bad terms with the Lord Deputy of Ireland, Leonard Grey, 1st Viscount Grane, but evidently on good terms with Thomas Cromwell; Ball argues that a letter to Cromwell in 1537 concerning a lawsuit between Howth and the Archbishop of Dublin suggests that Cromwell thought highly of him.
As the Volunteers marched from Howth back to Dublin, however, they were met by a large patrol of the Dublin Metropolitan Police and the British Army.
The main road through the area is the North Strand Road, which serves as a main arterial route for traffic to and from the city centre and Malahide, Howth and the M50.
