He was an incorporator of the first English Company, and helped finance Sir Hugh Willoughby's attempt to find a Northeast Passage in 1553, which would end in disaster.
They turned back and as the storms worsened decided to winter in a bay on the coast at a place now known to be on the Kola Peninsula in the general area to the east of Murmansk.

Setting out again despite warnings of the danger he found the entrance to the White Sea and with local help eventually arrived at Arkhangelsk.
Other positions included Vice-President of the Society for the Encouragement of Fine Arts, Trustee for the British Museum and a Commissioner on the Board of Longitude.
In 1553 he took part in the expedition which was dispatched from the Thames under Sir Hugh Willoughby to look for a northern passage to Cathay and India, serving as master of the Edward Bonaventure, on which Richard Chancellor sailed as pilot in chief.
