Later he did postdoctoral research at ICTP, Trieste, CERN and Max Planck Institute before joining TIFR as a faculty member in 2003.
This award entitled nine months fully sponsored three visits to the ICTP, Trieste, Italy for attending the workshops and doing the research in the fields of real-time applications, Hardware Interface for MATLAB, fourier transforming intelligent sensors, development of image processing algorithm for vehicle detection and monitoring Applications, Performance Evaluation of a Multiprocessor Systems Using Hardware Simulation.
He has been awarded The Wolfson Merit Award, Doctorate Honoris Causa from Universidad de San Carlos de Guatemala and Universidad del Valle de Guatemala, John Solomon Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship and the 1998 ICTP Prize in High Energy Physics.
He studied also a visiting scholar at several major physics centers around the world: Joint Institute for Nuclear Research, JINR (at Dubna in Russia), Joint Institute for Laboratory Astrophysics, JILA (Boulder, Colorado, USA), International Centre for Theoretical Physics, ICTP (Trieste in Italy), and the University of Pittsburgh, (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA).
During his stay at ICTP, he began his studies and research in the field of Solid-state physics which led him to win the "Associate ICTP Award in Solid-State Physics".
Since then the initiative has been supported by many international organisations, including the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM), International Organization for Medical Physics (IOMP), International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), World Health Organization (WHO), and International Center for Theoretical Physics (ICTP).
She is the first and only Indian to win the prestigious ICTP Ramanujan Prize in 2006 and also a winner of the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award in 2004.
After the ICTP, Husain moved to Sweden to attend Stockholm University where her thesis advisor was Dr. Ansar Fayyazuddin.
