4 unusual facts about IDEO

Bill Verplank

He went on to work with Bill Moggridge, first at IDtwo and then at IDEO (1986–1992), bringing graphical user interfaces to the world of product design.

IDEO

IDEO was formed in 1991 by a merger of four established design firms: David Kelley Design (founded by Stanford University professor David Kelley), London-based Moggridge Associates and San Francisco's ID Two (both founded by British-born Bill Moggridge), and Matrix Product Design (founded by Mike Nuttall).

The firm employs over 550 people in the disciplines of human factors, mechanical, electrical and software engineering, industrial design, interaction design, and communication design.

Esperanto, in his view, was a theoretically neutral instrument for communication, which could serve as a vehicle for idealistic values, initially Zamenhof's philosophy of homaranismo, later the interna ideo (internal idea) of achieving "fraternity and justice among all people" (Zamenhof) through the adoption of Esperanto.

Copenhagen Institute of Interaction Design

Many of the CIID faculty have been involved in the now defunct Interaction Design Institute Ivrea, Royal College of Art's Interaction Design course, the ITP course at New York University, and the MIT Media Lab and visiting faculty have included people from IDEO, Smart Design, Frog Design, Stamen and The Rockwell Group.

MetaDesign

In 1992, MetaDesign established the San Francisco office, around Bill Hill (IDEO) and Terry Irwin (Landor Associates), and then in 1995 the London office around Tim Fendley (now Founder of Applied Information Group), and Robin Richmond (now founder Immersive Projects), formerly Union Design.

Meta's San Francisco office grew a reputation for client relationships with Silicon Valley technology companies and developed innovative interactive teaching media including ViZability, IDEO's first web site, publishing systems for Ernst & Young and McGraw Hill and specialist event publicity for Fuse 98.

Mike Nuttall

In 1991, his company merged with two other established design firms, David Kelley Design (founded by David Kelley) and ID Two (founded by Britain's Bill Moggridge) to form the designing giant IDEO.

Weekly Innovation Challenge

Hill and Rogers stress the importance of innovation in both tech companies and universities: “To encourage more play on the job, colleges and universities could emulate nonacademic institutions like Google, Bell Labs, and IDEO by establishing playrooms and allocating time specifically for the purpose of fostering creativity”.
