December 9, 1971: Mahendra Nath Mulla, the captain of the Indian frigate INS Khukri, went down with the ship after it was attacked by a submarine in the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971.
In the very next year (1961), INS Vikrant (formerly HMS Hercules) was acquired by the Indian Navy.
