Krol was drafted by the Oakland Athletics in the seventh round of the 2009 Major League Baseball Draft out of Neuqua Valley High School in Naperville, Illinois, despite not pitching in his senior year due to an alcohol-related offense.
On December 2, 2013, Lombardozzi was traded to the Detroit Tigers, along with pitchers Ian Krol and Robbie Ray, for starting pitcher Doug Fister.
