It is the headquarters of the Kilombero District administration and the main trading centre for Kilombero and Ulanga districts.

Ifakara is home to the Mbunga tribe though the population today constitutes of the Pogolo and Ndamba tribes as well as descendants of royalty from Zululand (Larson 1976:14).
In Tanzania, there is intensive agriculture in Ifakara and the species may also have now disappeared from that locality.
