Melanopsin was originally discovered by Ignacio Provencio and his colleagues in 1998, in the specialized light sensitive cells of frog skin.
In 1991 Russell G. Foster and colleagues, including Ignacio Provencio, discovered a non-rod, non-cone photoreceptor in the eyes of mice.
