It was formed on 1 January 2012 by the merger of the former municipalities Ilfeld and Niedersachswerfen.
Since 1 January 2012, it has been part of the municipality of Harztor.
After going to the Gymnasium at the Ilfeld monastery school, Otto Kiep studied law in Germany and London, and graduated from the University of Leipzig with a Dr. jur. degree, while also earning a Bachelor of Law degree in London.

During the period 1779 to 1783 Wolf taught, first at Ilfeld, then at Osterode.
The seat of the Verwaltungsgemeinschaft is in Ilfeld (part of Harztor).
