The southern part of the London Borough of Lewisham as well as a small part of the Royal Borough of Greenwich fall outside its boundaries whilst 44 of its 119 districts are in Outer London and its irregular shape stretches to the Greater London boundary at Mill Hill and Scratch Wood and beyond it at Sewardstone.
In Inner London however, Part VI of the London Building Acts (Amendment) Act 1939 set out a well tried and tested mechanism for resolving disputes, having evolved over numerous previous enactments of that legislation since the mid nineteenth century.
This legislation is only applicable to England and Wales, which, on 1st July 1997, replaced Part VI of the London Building Acts (Amendment) Act 1939, which was only applicable to the Inner London Boroughs.

In 1960, the Greater London Plan proposed that over one million Londoners should be relocated from Inner London.
He was Chairman of the London County Council and subsequently first Chairman from 1964-66 of the Greater London Council, Chairman of the Inner London Educational Authortiy, President from 1962-71 of the School Journey Association, and a member of the Robbins Committee.
