She was the oldest daughter of Duke Ferdinando of Malteno and Castellana de Cardona.
In 1551 moved to live in the Kingdom of Naples, where he participated with Renaissance poets to create a volume - written in italian - in honour of Giovanna d'Aragona, Dukess of Paliano.
The half siblings of Giulio, who Ercole fathered with his wife Eleonora d'Aragona, were Alfonso I d'Este (successor to his father), Ippolito d'Este (Cardinal Ippolito), Ferrante d'Este, Isabella d'Este (wife of Francesco II Gonzaga), Beatrice d'Este (wife of Ludovico Sforza), and Sigismondo d'Este.
In 1465 he moved to Milan, where he was in charge of the celebrations for the wedding of Eleonora d'Aragona with the Duke of Bari.
In 1475, a legendary wedding took place in Pesaro: Costanzo Sforza and Camilla D'Aragona married.
He made an enemy of Bona of Savoy's consellor Cicco Simonetta and was forced into exile together with Ludovico Sforza, and was condemned to death by beheading in absentia and his goods were confiscated and given to Ercole d'Este.
He married Lucia Palizzi, daughter of the count of Novara.
One notable casualty of the conflict was the condottiero Roberto Sanseverino d'Aragona.
