6 unusual facts about Intel 80286

Banyan Systems

In 1986 the corporation recognized that the IBM PC-AT architecture had become an industry standard, and that lack of VINES support for an industry standard PC server architecture was limiting its sales capabilities, and began work on porting VINES to an Intel 80286-based version of SVR3.

Intel 80286

The 80286 was designed for multi-user systems with multitasking applications, including communications (such as automated PBXs) and real-time process control.

MSCDEX

It has more flexible load-high capabilities, also allowing to relocate and run in protected mode through DPMS on 286 and higher processors, thereby leaving only a 7 KB stub in conventional or upper memory (in comparison to MSCDEX, which occupies some 16 KB).

Orchid Technology

After this successful product, the company embarked on introducing high-performance add-in cards, most notably the PC Turbo, TinyTurbo and TurboVGA enhancement cards that included 186 and 286 processors.

QBasic

However, if used on any 8088/8086 computers, or on some 80286 computers, the QBasic program may run very slowly, or perhaps not at all, due to DOS memory size limits.

Triple fault

The Intel 80286 processor was the first to introduce the now-ubiquitous protected mode.
