unusual facts about Interoperability

Nordbib

Nordbib was given three major focus areas (named "work packages") vis-a-vis open access to clarify its mission: Policy & Visibility, Content & Accessibility, and Infrastructure & Interoperability respectively.

ABCA Armies

ABCA Armies (formally, the American, British, Canadian, Australian and New Zealand Armies' Program) is a program aimed at optimizing interoperability and standardization of training and equipment between the armies of the United States of America, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, plus the United States Marine Corps and the Royal Marines.

Brekeke PBX

Brekeke PBX comes with a bundled SIP server and is fully SIP-compliant (RFC 3261 Standard), which ensures that it has the highest level of interoperability with other SIP devices and services.

Component-based software engineering

Part of the Babel Scientific Programming Language Interoperability System (SIDL and Babel are core technologies of the CCA and the SciDAC TASCS Center - see above.)

Content-addressable memory

A major interface definition for CAMs and other Network Search Elements (NSEs) was specified in an Interoperability Agreement called the Look-Aside Interface (LA-1 and LA-1B) developed by the Network Processing Forum, which later merged with the Optical Internetworking Forum (OIF).

Core fonts for the Web

Even though the fonts are available from some third-party web sites (such as an anonymous SourceForge project) and are included with Mac OS, Håkon Wium Lie (Chief technical officer of Opera Software) cited the cancellation of the project as an example of Microsoft resisting interoperability.

Decompiler

In Europe, the 1991 Software Directive explicitly provides for a right to decompile in order to achieve interoperability.

European Soil Database

According to INSPIRE principles, this application has been created and extended so that it is possible to combine layers of maps located in different map servers all around the World, based on International Web Map Service (WMS) standards and specifications from the Open GIS Consortium, as also laid down in the INSPIRE Guidelines, in order to attain the maximum interoperability of data and services.

Global Information Network Architecture

GINA was developed to become a High Level Architecture (HLA) for System Fusion Networks (SFN) as an interoperable and multi-level security ("MLS") engine.

Google Reader

Instapaper developer Marco Arment speculated that the real reason for the closure was to try to keep everyone reading and sharing information using Google+, and that it signalled the end of the era of unrestricted and interoperable web services like RSS from large organizations like Google, Facebook, and Twitter.

Intel SOA Products Division

Intel SOA Expressway for Healthcare is a software product that provides secure interoperability across different domains such as hospitals, state Health Information Exchanges (HIE), or national healthcare integration networks.

IP camera

In order to address issues of standardization of IP video surveillance, two industry groups were formed in 2008: the Open Network Video Interface Forum (ONVIF) and the Physical Security Interoperability Alliance (PSIA).

Lightweight Access Point Protocol

LWAPP was proposed by Airespace, as a standard protocol to provide interoperability among any brand of access point.

Microtiter plate

The standards govern various characteristics of a microplate including well dimensions (e.g. diameter, spacing and depth) as well as plate properties (e.g. dimensions and rigidity) (typical dimension ~5"x3.33"), which allows interoperability between microplates, instrumentation and equipment from different suppliers, and is particularly important in laboratory automation.

Multi-simulation coordinator

The developers and colleagues from the NEST and MOOSE simulator communities demonstrated interoperability via MUSIC at the 2008 Society for Neuroscience meeting.

MWG

Metadata Working Group, a company consortium to advance the interoperability of metadata stored in digital media

Nokia 9300

All variants of the 9300 include multi-profile Bluetooth and IR for interoperability, the Opera web browser, a POP3/IMAP/BlackBerry Enterprise Server-compatible/SMS/MMS e-mail and messaging client, the ability to create, read, write and edit native Word, Excel and PowerPoint files.

Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting

In the late 1990s, Herbert Van de Sompel (Ghent University) was working with researchers and librarians at Los Alamos National Laboratory (US) and called a meeting to address difficulties related to interoperability issues of e-print servers and digital repositories.

OpenFabrics Alliance

Consulting members include the Ethernet Alliance, the InfiniBand Trade Association, Lamprey Networks, Ohio State University, and the University of New Hampshire InterOperability Laboratory.

OpenLearn

The use of an open source virtual learning environment, along with the ability for people to download and upload materials in various formats (from an RSS to a print to an IMS Common Cartridge) encourages replication of the content and enables interoperability with other provider’s content management systems.

OpenSpirit Alliance

Launched in July 1997, the OpenSpirit Alliance was a consortium sharing a common goal of enabling multi-vendor Exploration and Production application interoperability based on industry standards.

Police tactical group

An example of such interoperability was the Port Arthur massacre that saw the Tasmanian Police Special Operations Group assisted by the Victorian Police Special Operations Group.

Presidential Innovation Fellows

The Blue Button specifically refers to the movement to help Americans access their own digital health data, alongside standards and interoperability work for additional open formats, namely Blue Button+, that build upon Meaningful Use regulation-related standards for electronic health records.

PSIA

Physical Security Interoperability Alliance, industrial standardization initiative promoting interoperability of IP-enabled security devices
