95th Reconnaissance Squadron

Well-known pilots with the 95th Aero Squadron who perished in World War I included Lt. Quentin Roosevelt, the youngest son of President Theodore Roosevelt, and Irby Curry.

Irby Curry

On August 10, 1918, while on protection patrol, he was killed in an aerial combat over Perles, France.

Vanderbilt Stadium

The old field was re-christened Curry Field, in honor of Irby "Rabbit" Curry, a standout football player from 1914–16, who left Vanderbilt to serve in the American Expeditionary Force to Europe in World War I and was killed while flying a combat mission over France in 1918.
