Colonel Francis Webb, writing under the name "Philalethes," argued that as the paper was old the documents must have belonged to Shakespeare's time; there would have been no reason to forge them then; therefore they must be genuine.

The novel was apparently a major influence on William Henry Ireland, the author of the Shakespeare Forgeries, who used the subplot about forgery as an inspiration.


1796 in literature

Samuel Ireland publishes a collection of Shakespearean forgeries in his Miscellaneous Papers and Legal Instruments Under the Hand and Seal of William Shakespeare (dated this year but actually produced on 24 December 1795).
