On 7 June 1896 he chaired an open-air meeting on the steps of the Custom House in Dublin which launched the Irish Socialist Republican Party, although he declined to join it himself.
Other notable figures in the 'first' ISRP included William X. O'Brien who became a leading figure in the Irish Trade Union movement, Cork man Con Lehane, future Northern Irish Senator Robert Dorman and Tom Lyng.
James and Lillie Connolly and their three daughters, Nora, Mona and Aideen set sail for Dublin in 1896, where he founded the Irish Socialist Republican Party in May 1896.
This dual communist-nationalist doctrine was heavily influenced by the thinking of James Connolly who similarly believed in socialism and independence for Ireland and had set up his Irish Socialist Republican Party in 1896.
