According to Irven DeVore, "for the succeeding thirty years almost all of the accurate information available on the behavior of monkeys and apes living in natural environments was the result of Carpenter's research and writing."
Professor DeVore was doing field research on the behavior and ecology of baboons in 1959, at the same time Jane Goodall was doing her research on chimpanzees and Robert Ardrey was writing African Genesis, and has also studied the San of southern Africa.
"Man the Hunter" was the name given to a 1966 symposium organized by Richard Lee and Irven DeVore.
