For a time, he lived as one of the workers in the household of church founder, Mary Baker Eddy, later writing a book about his experiences, called, Mary Baker Eddy: Twelve Years with Mary Baker Eddy.

Then he studied law with Thomas A. Tomlinson and George A. Simmons at Keeseville, New York, was admitted to the bar in 1832, and commenced practice at Salina, New York.
In July 1915 Washburn and Williams won the doubles title at the Eastern Tennis Championship in Brookline defeating Irving C. Wright and Wallace F. Johnson in four sets.
