By 1986, Alfa Romeo's parent company, the Italian-government owned Istituto per la Ricostruzione Industriale was suffering from heavy losses, and IRI president Romano Prodi put Alfa Romeo up for sale, with Fiat ultimately emerging as the new owner of Alfa.
The airline was established in 1956 November under the ELI-Linee Italiane S.p.A with capital of IRI and Alitalia operating 1 A.B.204 and 2Agusta-Bell AB.102 helicopters.
Others were planned but never carried out, such as the steelworks of Gioia Tauro.
Agostino Rocca, an executive at Ansaldo, Dalmine and Siac (steel and iron industries), and prominent member of the IRI broke with dictator Benito Mussolini after his declaration of the Italian Social Republic over Northern Italy, in 1943, and emigrated to Argentina after World War II.
