The presence of Dutch, French, and English explorers in the estuary of the Amazon River has concurred for the settlement of Portuguese expeditionaries in the current territory of the State of Pará, and also for the expedition of Francisco Caldeira Castelo Branco which, in 1616, has founded the city of Belém.

Among these expeditions, the one headed by captain Pedro Teixeira reached for the first time (in 1626) the Tapajós River.
From Itaituba and southwest a part of the Trans-Amazonian highway (BR-230) follows the river, while a part of BR-163 runs parallel to the river from Santarém and south.

26 April 1994: a Cessna 208A Caravan registration PT-OGI flying from Itaituba to Jacareacanga under poor visibility and below minimums crashed shortly before touch-down at Jacareacanga partly due to the pilot's lack of experience.
