From the Late Postclassic Paris Codex back in time to the Pre-Classic San Bartolo murals, god D (Itzamna) has the so-called Principal Bird Deity - perhaps the Yaxcocahmut mentioned above - for a transformative shape (see figure).
Itzamna |
According to Francisco Hernández (quoted by Las Casas and Diego López de Cogolludo), Bacab was the son of the creator god, Itzamna, and of the goddess Ixchebelyax; he had once been humbled, killed, and revived.
Its principal temples were sacred to the creator deity Itzamna and to the Sun God Kinich Ahau.
Several other deities evince a large eye, such as god D (Itzamna), Chaak, and various jaguar gods.
