Schaumann bodies were initially described in 1871 by Oscar von Schüppel (1837-1881), a pathologist at the University of Tübingen.

In 1946 he became an honorary doctor at the University of Paris, and during the following year, he became a corresponding member of the Académie Nationale de Médecine.
These inclusions were named after Swedish dermatologist Jörgen Nilsen Schaumann.
